Want to make a latte or cappuccino at home? But you don’t have an espresso machine to steam milk. No problem! I will teach you how to froth milk at home using a French press.
How to froth milk using a French Press
My husband and I are not huge coffee drinkers in the morning, but occasionally, we love an excellent hot cafe latte. We have a fun weekend morning routine to go to our nearest coffee shop and buy our favorite drinks. I usually get a latte or a white chocolate mocha, and my husband orders a hot mocha. However, as our schedule became busier, we found it a little challenging to set aside the time in the morning to visit our favorite cafe. So, lately, we opted to make our drinks at home. It only takes less than 10 minutes to make a latte for two by frothing your milk at home using a French press. Here’s how to do it:
- Choose your milk. We usually use whole milk or 2% because they have more fats and proteins that help increase the creaminess of the foam.
- Microwave the milk for about 30 – 45 seconds. You can also heat the milk on the stove. However, using a microwave is easier.
- Pour the warm or hot milk into the french press and attach the french press lid/plunger.
- Raise and plunge the fine mesh filter of the french press for about 20 times or so until the milk has doubled in size.
- Then remove the french press lid/plunger and pour the freshly made frothed milk into your drink and enjoy!
- Note: I usually swirl and tap the french press pitcher on the counter to get rid of big bubbles so that I can achieve a close resemblance to a perfect velvety foam that a steam wand creates.
What is the difference between steamed milk and frothed milk?
The difference is that steamed milk has a very fine and velvety foam that’s great for making latte art. Frothed milk has less precise foam and is a more approachable way for home brewers to enjoy a latte at home.
Does the milk need to be heated?
The heat helps trap air to create a fine foam, but you can still froth cold milk, which is best for iced drinks. The milk, however, won’t be as creamy.
What other tools can I use to froth milk if I don’t have a French press?
Other alternative ways to froth milk at home are mason jar, a milk frother, and a blender.
Can I froth substitute milk using a French press?
Yes, you can! Barista blend substitute milk can froth easily with a french press. For other brands, you will have to try it and see :).
